Built to look fast and possessing the performance to back it up, the CBR 1100XX Super Blackbird held the title of the fastest production motorcycle when it was launched back in 1996.

Honda first introduced the CBR 1100XX Super Blackbird in late 1996 as a 1997 model in the original colors: Black, Titanium and Red. It soon became a popular sportbike for its combination of a smooth, powerful engine, great handling, comfort, reliability, quality and of course, it's blistering speed.

The Super Blackbird was manufactured from 1996 thru 2007, but 2003 was the last year it was imported to the US.

Through the years, there were small improvements made from year to year, but no major overhauls were done - or necessary - the Super Blackbird was practically bulletproof to begin with.

2000 Honda CBR1100XX

The Honda CBR1100XX, also known as the Super Blackbird, was manufactured by Honda from 1996 to 2007 - only imported to the US from 1996 - 2003. In the mid 1990s, Honda was determined to produce the world's fastest production motorcycle and to take over the associated bragging rights and marketing impact, which was at that time held by Kawasaki with its ZZ-R 1100. This led to the creation of the CBR1100XX Super Blackbird, which achieved a verifiable 177 mph, and was indeed titled the fastest production motorcycle until 1999 - when the crown was snagged by Suzuki and the Hayabusa.

Fun fact - The Blackbird name was a nod to the Lockheed SR-71 aircraft - once the world's fastest aircraft.

Fun fact #2 - Hayabusa 隼 is Japanese for Peregrine Falcon, a bird that often serves as a metaphor for speed due to its vertical hunting dive, or stoop, in which it can reach speeds of 180 to 240 miles per hour, the fastest of any bird. The peregrine falcon is also known to prey on blackbirds
